About Type 2 Sports

I’m Coach Chris and Type 2 Sports was born out of my love for helping athletes achieve their goals and discover new things about themselves. I’ve been coaching cyclists since 2015 and I have been a cyclist since as far back as I can remember. I only dabbled in running from time to time until December of 2023 when a cycling accident took me off the bike and I picked running back up so as not to lose fitness.

Just for fun I signed up for a 10K run and took 1st place in my age group. Discovering that I had some ability, I decided to stick with running even after I had healed enough to return to cycling. That is when I tried my first trail run. I was hooked. I took my knowledge of athlete development and applied it to myself and ran my first 50K Ultramarathon in November 2024 – less than a year after I had taken up running.

It’s interesting that almost all of my life, I have been focused on developing other people. Much of my military career in the Air Force was spent as an Airborne Instructor or Foreign Language Instructor. After my military career, I was a Math and Computer Science teacher in various public school districts in Texas. Even while working a second job at a bicycle shop, I conducted bicycle maintenance classes.

Coaching melds my understanding of data and the science of athlete development with my desire to help others. I draw not only on my professional experiences above but also formal training as a coach. I am a level 2 certified Training Peaks coach, a Level 2 USA Cycling Coach, and a UESCA certified Ultrarunning Coach. I also have studied under Hunter Allen of Peaks Coaching Group and am a Master/Elite coach with them.

Why “Type 2”

Well, if you’ve ever heard the phrase “type two fun” you would understand how that applies to endurance sports. I love the definition Kelly Cordes used in a blog post for REI

Type 2 fun is miserable while it’s happening, but fun in retrospect. It usually begins with the best intentions, and then things get carried away. Riding your bicycle across the country. Doing an ultramarathon…….

I’m not into racing, why would I need a coach?

I love working with people who have goals. Even non-racers have goals and want to reach them safely. Perhaps you want to just test your limits running trails. Maybe you want to keep up with the B-group at the local bike shop ride. Or….you have had a sudden realization that your current lifestyle needs to change to improve your physical fitness and/or mental state. All of these provide the opportunity to develop and a coach is the best way to do it.
